Keychain – Head Gasket for PSA XUD Diesel
The PSA XUD family is one of the diesel engine ranges that defined Peugeot and Citroën particularly strongly throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It was used across superminis, compact and mid-size cars, MPVs and light commercial vehicles, and also found its way into cars from several other manufacturers. The family mainly includes the 1.8-litre XUD7, the extremely widespread 1.9-litre XUD9 and the larger XUD11 at around 2.1 litres. Depending on version, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines were produced, with intercooling on many turbo variants. Typical applications range from the Peugeot 205, 306, 309, 405 and 406 to the Citroën BX, ZX, Xantia, XM, C15, Berlingo and Jumpy.
Technically, the XUD represents the classic diesel era before common rail and HDi. These are water-cooled inline-four engines with indirect pre-chamber injection and belt-driven camshafts. XUD7 and XUD9 versions generally use eight valves, while the XUD11 has an unusual 12-valve cylinder head. The XUD9 is particularly associated with its 1,905 cc displacement, while the XUD7 measures 1,769 cc. The XUD11 was produced as a 2,138 cc naturally aspirated engine and as 2,088 cc turbocharged versions. Depending on specification, Bosch or Lucas mechanical injection pumps were used, while the later XUD11 BTE adopted the electronically controlled Lucas EPIC system.
There are also many individual designations within the family. XUD7, XUD7TE, XUD9, XUD9A, XUD9TE, XUD9SD, XUD11A, XUD11ATE and XUD11BTE describe different generations and configurations. PSA identification codes including 161A, A8A, A9A, AJZ, D9A, D9B, DJY, DJZ, D8B, DHY, DHX, DHW, P8A, P8C, P9A, PHZ and PJZ also appear in vehicle data and parts catalogues. For owners of older Peugeot and Citroën models, these codes are often the clearest way to identify the exact engine. The later DW range and especially the 2.0 HDi already belong to the succeeding diesel generation rather than the classic XUD family.
The XUD also became unusually widespread outside PSA itself. Depending on market and year, Rover 200 and 400 models, the Honda Concerto, Hyundai Lantra, Suzuki Baleno, Samurai and Vitara, Lada Niva and FSO Polonez all appeared with XUD-derived power. Fiat Ulysse, Scudo and Ducato models and the Lancia Zeta add further applications through shared European van and commercial-vehicle projects. That means the same basic engine family can turn up in very different enthusiast circles today, from a Peugeot 205 Diesel or Citroën BX Turbo D to an off-roader or light commercial vehicle.
Whether it lives on your own keys or as a gift for someone with a classic Peugeot, Citroën or one of the many XUD-powered models from other manufacturers, this keychain is deliberately tied to the engine family itself. Anyone familiar with XUD9, 1.9 TD, D8B or P8C will recognise more than just an old diesel engine: it represents a generation of technology that powered a substantial part of PSA’s European range for many years.
Proudly crafted in Germany, meticulously detailed and finely finished for a refined in-hand feel paired with a premium brushed surface.
