BMW N20 Keychain
The BMW N20 was one of the most important engines of the 2010s. As a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with direct injection, it replaced the N52/N53 straight-sixes in many models and marked the beginning of BMW’s downsizing era. Despite its smaller displacement, the N20 delivered strong torque and impressive efficiency thanks to its twin-scroll turbocharger and Valvetronic system.
The N20 powered cars such as the F30 320i/328i, the F10 520i/528i, the X1 and X3, as well as the Z4. With outputs ranging from 156 to 245 hp, it proved that a four-cylinder could still embody BMW’s sporty character. In the U.S., the SULEV version N26 was introduced, featuring stricter emission and fuel system technology – yet sharing the same head gasket design.
Technically, the N20 was a crucial bridge: it introduced BMW to the era of turbocharged four-cylinders and paved the way for the later B48, which continues that legacy today. Although controversial at first for replacing the straight-six, the N20 has earned its place as a milestone in modern BMW engineering.
