The Land Rover 300Tdi is, for many, the ultimate classic Tdi engine: a 2.5-litre inline-four turbodiesel with direct injection that refined what the 200Tdi started. Many owners add an EGT gauge once they tweak pump and boost so head gasket, pistons and valves aren’t pushed beyond their comfort zone on long motorway climbs. The relatively open engine bay in Defenders and Discovery 1 makes routine maintenance and repairs manageable with normal tools – a big reason why the 300Tdi is popular in remote-travel builds.
