Keychain – Head Gasket for Land Rover 300Tdi

The Land Rover 300Tdi is, for many, the ultimate classic Tdi engine: a 2.5-litre inline-four turbodiesel with direct injection that refined what the 200Tdi started. From the mid-1990s onwards it powered Defender 90/110/130 and Discovery Series I, becoming the go-to choice for overlanding builds, greenlane rigs and no-nonsense daily Defenders. Say “300Tdi” and most enthusiasts picture a mechanical injection pump, solid axles and a truck that’s happiest when the tarmac ends.

Technically it’s a longitudinal cast-iron four-cylinder with an alloy head, single overhead cam, two valves per cylinder, turbocharger and intercooler. Displacement is around 2,495 cc, with the mechanical rotary injection pump giving the engine its familiar Tdi soundtrack and straightforward tuneability. Compared with the 200Tdi, the 300Tdi brought improvements in refinement, packaging and service access while keeping the simple, field-repairable character intact.

In day-to-day use, the main talking points are classic diesel fundamentals: staying on top of timing belt, tensioners and water pump, keeping the radiator and cooling system healthy, and using decent oil at sensible change intervals. Many owners add an EGT gauge once they tweak pump and boost so head gasket, pistons and valves aren’t pushed beyond their comfort zone on long motorway climbs. The relatively open engine bay in Defenders and Discovery 1 makes routine maintenance and repairs manageable with normal tools – a big reason why the 300Tdi is popular in remote-travel builds.

Within the community, the 300Tdi is a staple of serious travel and off-road Land Rovers: Defender 90, 110 and 130 with roof tents, demountable campers or full expedition interiors, Discovery 1 300Tdi as an affordable, highly capable trail truck, and countless 300Tdi swaps into older Series trucks around the world. Fuel pump tweaks, slightly more boost, uprated intercoolers, snorkels, underbody protection and bigger tyres are common mods when prepping for TET routes, Morocco, Iceland, the Pyrenees or just a muddy weekend in Wales.

This head-gasket keychain is a small stainless tribute to that engine – ideal for the keys of your Defender 90/110/130 or Discovery 1, or for the friend whose next big plan starts with “I’ve found a good 300Tdi lump…”. At first glance it’s a clean piece of metal, on second look it’s a clear signal to anyone who knows the sound of a 300Tdi climbing a long hill in fourth low.

Proudly crafted in Germany, meticulously detailed and finely finished for a refined in-hand feel paired with a premium brushed surface.

*The "rubberized" covers (TPU) are clipped on, not glued. They still hold perfectly and can be removed if you prefer the "bare" look. We can't guarantee they can be reattached afterward. So either leave them on or take them off, but no back and forth :)
