BMW S38/M88 Keychain
The BMW M88 and S38 engines are among the most iconic inline-sixes in the brand’s history. First introduced in 1978, the M88/1 was developed for the BMW M1 supercar, drawing directly from the legendary M49 race engine used in Formula 2 and touring cars. With four-valve technology, individual throttle bodies, and up to 286 hp in road trim, it marked the beginning of BMW Motorsport’s high-revving six-cylinder legacy.
A detuned and more practical version, the M88/3, powered the E28 M5 and BMW M635 CSi – cars that are today considered true legends. The S38 evolved from this base, adapting the concept for stricter emissions and global markets. With displacements from 3.5 to 3.8 liters and outputs of up to 340 hp, it became the heart of the E34 M5 and the E24 M6, combining raw motorsport character with daily usability.
To this day, the S38 is regarded as the ultimate purist’s BMW straight-six: uncompromisingly sporty, high-revving, and deeply rooted in racing DNA. Its sound and character remain unmatched in the brand’s long engine history.
