The Mercedes OM656 is the modern straight-six diesel powering upper-class saloons, SUVs and off-roaders from the late 2010s onwards. With just under 3.0 litres of displacement, six cylinders in line, four-valve heads and turbocharging, it sits in cars like the S 350 d, S 400 d, E 350 d, G 350 d and various GLE/GLS 400 d models – wherever long-distance ability, towing and efficiency have to work together.
Technically, the OM656 combines high-pressure common-rail injection with finely controlled multi-stage injection events, sophisticated exhaust aftertreatment (DPF, SCR/AdBlue) and a torque-focused turbocharger setup. An aluminium cylinder head with four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and carefully shaped combustion chambers helps deliver smooth running and a broad usable rev band, from relaxed cruising to sustained autobahn speeds.
Most owner conversations focus less on the bottom end and more on the ecosystem around it: AdBlue hardware, sensors, DPF loading, EGR components and oil and fuel quality. Regularly letting the car regenerate its DPF properly, not short-changing service intervals and keeping an eye on fluids gives the head gasket, injectors and turbocharger an easy life even at high mileage.
