Keychain – Head Gasket for Mercedes-AMG M178

The Mercedes M178 is the motorsport-oriented member of AMG’s 4.0-litre V8 family: a twin-turbo hot-V engine with dry-sump lubrication, external oil tank and hardware designed to cope with serious track abuse. It powers the AMG GT range (C190) – from the “regular” GT through GT S and GT C to the GT R, GT R Pro, GT Black Series and GT Track Series – as well as a handful of halo projects beyond.

Technically, it shares the same 3,982 cc aluminium block with 83 mm bore and 92 mm stroke as the M176/M177, combined with four-valve DOHC heads, variable cam timing, direct injection and twin-scroll turbos mounted in the V. The big differentiator is the dry-sump system: instead of a conventional sump, an external tank and scavenge pumps keep the oil where it needs to be, even under high lateral g on slicks.

Running an M178 properly means thinking like a race engineer: watching oil and coolant temperatures, keeping intercoolers efficient, and respecting warm-up and cool-down phases. Track-driven cars benefit from short oil-change intervals, careful inspection of turbochargers, exhaust and charge-air hardware, and generally treating the engine as the serious piece of equipment it is.

Within the enthusiast community, the M178 is inseparable from the AMG GT image: GT C as a fast road GT, GT R as a green-hell weapon, Black Series and Track Series as full-on aero monsters. The sound, the throttle response and the way the engine takes sustained punishment are exactly what many people associate with “modern AMG at its best”.
