Keychain – Head Gasket for Mercedes-AMG M133
The Mercedes-AMG M133 landed in 2013 as a bombshell: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four powering the A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG (C117) and GLA 45 AMG (X156) with up to around 381 hp and 475 Nm. For many enthusiasts it was the first “real” AMG engine in a compact car and set a new benchmark for production four-cylinder output.
Based on the M270, the M133 received the full Affalterbach treatment: aluminium block and head, DOHC 16-valve valvetrain, high-pressure direct injection and a big twin-scroll turbocharger tuned for serious boost and quick response. A reinforced bottom end, optimised cooling circuits and carefully shaped intake and exhaust paths help it deliver impressive specific output while remaining road-usable.
Keeping an M133 healthy is all about respecting heat and load: gentle warm-up, quality oil, frequent checks of boost hoses and intercooler performance, and not ignoring misfires or knock under full throttle. Tuned cars benefit from upgraded intercoolers, freer-flowing exhausts and, where necessary, fuel-system improvements to keep head gasket, pistons and valves in a safe window.
In the community, the engine is synonymous with the first-gen A 45, CLA 45 and GLA 45 – from subtle Stage-1 daily drivers to 400+ hp track and drag builds. The combination of 4MATIC traction, quick-shifting dual-clutch gearboxes and that angry four-cylinder soundtrack made the M133-powered cars instant cult machines in the hot hatch world.
