The Mercedes M103 is the archetypal late-80s/early-90s straight-six – a 12-valve SOHC engine with 2.6 or 3.0 litres of displacement. It powered cars like the W124 260 E and 300 E, the W201 190 E 2.6, W126 260 SE/300 SE/SEL, the R107 300 SL and early G-Class models such as the 300 GE. For many, this engine defines the robust, mechanical Mercedes era before turbos and heavy electronics took over.

Technically, the M103 uses a cast-iron block with a single overhead camshaft, two valves per cylinder and Bosch KE-Jetronic mechanical-electronic fuel injection.
