Keychain – Head Gasket for Toyota 2H
The Toyota 2H is a legendary 4.0-litre straight-six diesel that powered Land Cruiser HJ models throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. With around four litres of displacement, an inline-six layout, swirl-chamber combustion and a classic OHV valvetrain, it became the go-to workhorse engine in HJ47, HJ60, HJ61 and early 70-series trucks. Our keychain miniaturises the 2H head gasket – instantly recognisable to Land Cruiser enthusiasts.
Technically, the 2H is a slow-revving, torque-focused naturally aspirated diesel with a mechanical inline injection pump, two valves per cylinder and generously sized internals. Built for longevity, it features a stout crankshaft, heavy-duty bearings and a strong cast-iron block and head, all tuned for low-end torque rather than high-rpm power – ideal for low-range work, towing and loaded overland rigs.
Typical talking points are less about inherent weaknesses and more about age and use cases: cooling systems that need to be kept healthy (radiator, water pump, thermostat), especially on heavily loaded or hot-climate trucks; injector wear and glow plug performance on high-mileage engines; and the usual diesel-related seals and hoses that can weep after decades of service.
In the off-road and overlanding community, the 2H enjoys cult status. HJ47s built as workhorses, HJ60s turned into long-distance travel rigs and HJ61s used as more comfortable expedition platforms all rely on this engine’s willingness to just keep going. Many builds feature roof tents, bull bars, winches and big all-terrain tyres – with the 2H chugging away reliably in the background.
