Keychain – Head Gasket for Land Rover 200Tdi

The Land Rover 200Tdi is the engine that dragged Defender, Discovery and Range Rover Classic properly into the turbodiesel era. Introduced at the end of the 1980s, this 2.5-litre four-cylinder with direct injection replaced the old 2.5 Diesel Turbo and brought usable torque and respectable fuel economy to Solihull’s workhorses. Defender 90/110, early Discovery Series I and Range Rover Classic with a 200Tdi under the bonnet are what many people picture when they think of a “real” diesel Land Rover.

Technically it’s a longitudinal, cast-iron inline-four with an alloy head, single overhead camshaft, two valves per cylinder, turbocharger and intercooler. Mechanical direct injection via a rotary pump gives the engine its characteristic Tdi knock and straightforward tuneability. With around 110 bhp and plenty of low-end torque, the 200Tdi suits low-range gearing, live axles and centre diff lock perfectly – whether in a short Defender 90, a long 110 Station Wagon or a seven-seat Discovery 200Tdi.

Owner discussions tend to focus on fundamentals rather than fragile hardware: keeping on top of timing belt and tensioner changes, replacing the water pump and thermostat when due, making sure the radiator and cooling system are healthy and using decent diesel engine oil. Look after coolant levels and temperatures and the head gasket will usually stay happy; give the turbo proper warm-up and cool-down and it will serve you well, while a leak-free boost and intake system keeps smoke and EGTs in check.

Within the community, the 200Tdi has become a cult choice for touring and off-road builds. Many Defenders and Discoverys with this engine are running TET routes, North Africa trips, greenlanes in the UK or Scandinavian overland adventures. Tuning often revolves around modest fuel pump tweaks, slightly more boost, uprated intercoolers and an EGT gauge – not to turn the truck into a race car, but to free up a bit more shove while keeping reliability and simplicity intact.

This head-gasket keychain taps straight into that world: a small stainless reminder of the engine that powers your Defender 90/110, Discovery or Range Rover Classic. On your own keys it’s a quiet nod to anyone who recognises a 200Tdi by sound alone, and as a gift for a friend building or dailying a Tdi it hits exactly the right balance between insider signal and clean, minimalist design for everyday use.

Proudly crafted in Germany, meticulously detailed and finely finished for a refined in-hand feel paired with a premium brushed surface.

*The "rubberized" covers (TPU) are clipped on, not glued. They still hold perfectly and can be removed if you prefer the "bare" look. We can't guarantee they can be reattached afterward. So either leave them on or take them off, but no back and forth :)
